Free creative workshop in Saguenay: discover the Art Hives of Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean

When you don't know the concept and hear "Art Hive" for the first time, it's easy to imagine a workshop reserved for painting experts or accomplished artists. Good news: that's not the idea at all.

No need to master painting techniques (you can, but it's really not a prerequisite!). You can't cut in a straight line? That's fine too!

An Art Hive is above all a free, open creative space for everyone.

You come. You create. You try. You chat. And most of all, you do things at your own pace.

So what exactly is an Art Hive?

The simplest answer: it's a collective art workshop where everyone is free to create as they wish.

Unlike an art class, yes, there are people available to guide you, but there's no teacher at the front explaining, step by step, how to reproduce exactly the same painting as your neighbour. In an Art Hive, the experience is much more free-form.

Materials are provided and everyone can explore, create, test an idea or simply draw inspiration from what's happening around them. Art Hives are built on the idea that creativity isn't reserved for "artists": it belongs to everyone.

You arrive with a precise idea in mind? Perfect. You have absolutely no idea what you're going to make? Perfect too. You're curious and interested but not ready to dive in? That's okay — come watch and chat, Art Hives welcome you as well. There's no wrong way to participate.

No, you don't need to be an artist

That's probably the first thing to clarify. How many people see "art" and think "this is reeeeally not for me". Well, yes! It's for you too.

The goal of an Art Hive isn't to create a museum-worthy piece. There's no grade at the end, no contest, and nobody will come analyze your colour choices with a worried look.

You can paint, cut, glue, draw, craft or let your imagination run free. Workshops can take different forms and offer free creation, collective projects or the exploration of various techniques.

It's truly for everyone, of all ages:

• adults
• families
• children
• seniors
• newcomers
• people who create every day, as well as those whose last artistic experience probably dates back to a Mother's Day craft in elementary school.

The only real requirement is wanting to give it a try.

A creative workshop… but not only that

Of course, you come to an Art Hive to create. But what happens around the table is sometimes just as important as what ends up on your creation: you watch what the person next to you is doing. You exchange an idea. Someone shows you a technique, you ask where the scissors are... In short, you're part of a group and you build connections with people who are there for the same reasons as you.

That's actually an important part of the Art Hive spirit. These spaces were designed to foster encounters, reduce isolation and offer welcoming places where people can simply be present, exchange and create together. Art becomes the best excuse to share, connect and understand each other, despite our differences.

Reuse and sharing play a big role in the concept. Art Hives encourage the creative reuse of materials and operate on a logic of free access, resource sharing and a gift economy. In other words, a piece of cardboard, a scrap of fabric or an object that would normally have ended its life in a bin can suddenly become the start of an idea.

Art Hives all over Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean

We've already had the privilege of sharing several Art Hives held in the region over the past year, because yes, the whole idea of the Hives is that it's not a fixed appointment, but an invitation to create in a variety of environments.

The concept can set up in a community hall, a library, a school, a park or right at the heart of an event. There are fixed, mobile, semi-fixed or simply ephemeral Art Hives. The place changes, but the idea stays the same.

Art Hives x SOCIA: a partnership that was meant to be

At SOCIA, our goal is to help you discover activities near you and make it easier to meet people around shared interests. Art Hives want to create open spaces where people can meet, try something new and simply spend time together.

Let's be honest: the connection between our two organizations was obvious. It's therefore with great pleasure that SOCIA is partnering with the Art Hives of Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean to showcase their wonderful event planned for August 2026 and help even more people discover this beautiful concept.

On August 8 and 9, 2026, the Art Hives invite you to two days entirely dedicated to discovery and creativity, completely free! Art Hive sessions are offered in the morning and afternoon on both days.

The principle stays true to the spirit of the Hives: you come, you create and you leave whenever you like — no need to be there from start to finish.
